Ponderosa Volunteer Fire Department Round Up

June 2008

An Opportunity to Volunteer and Make a Difference In Our Community

What is an Emergency Services District and why does ESD #28 need your help?

An ESD is a political subdivision of the State of Texas with a mandate to provide emergency services to its residents. We accomplish this through The Ponderosa Fire Department. Since 1972, this organization of volunteers (and now full time and part time personnel) has provided the critical “first responder” fire and rescue services to thousands of residents, motorists, and businesses.

Our mission is to provide funding, leadership, and to promote excellence in the delivery of fire and rescue services to the residents of the District.

This is where we need your help….Your Time!

The Board of Commissioners needs your help in filling current and potential board vacancies. We are looking for individuals that meet the criteria listed below and have a desire to make a difference in our community.

We typically meet the third Monday of the month.

To serve as a member of the board you must be:

1)    At least 18 years of age

2)    A qualified voter within ESD 28 or the owner of land subject to taxation in the district

3)    Not related to a member of the fire department, nor

4)    Be an elected official on any other board.

If you are interested in making a difference, please contact Teresa, our Office Manager or the Fire Chief, Fred Windisch at 281-444-8465. All inquiries will be passed on to the Board.

Internet Telephone Cannot Use 9-1-1

Voice Over Internet (VoIP) telephone service is the latest rage – but you cannot use 9-1-1!  This situation is similar to when cell phones could not access 9-1-1, and it took many years to begin the process of fixing the problem (and it isn’t fixed yet).  Our recommendation is not to purchase VoIP at this time, but if you do, you must dial our direct emergency number 281-444-FIRE (3473) for emergencies.  This method precludes automatic data bursts of your address and phone number that hinders our computer aided dispatch.  Please consider asking the specific company if 9-1-1 works with VoIP.  Some companies MAY have systems that are being developed.

Please be sure to use lawn chemicals according to directions and make certain that you store them away from children.  Try not to store more than one gallon of gasoline in an approved container, and never store your swimming pool chemicals close to other products.  Be sure to NEVER mix swimming pool chemicals.

Car Seat Inspection Stations

CCEMS has recently been assigned as one of only 6 Houston Area Child Safety Seat Inspection Stations by the SAFE KIDS Greater Houston organization.  Inspection Stations educate parents on child passenger safety, inspect car seats and booster seats, and assist with seat replacement when possible.  Certified Car Seat Inspectors from CCEMS and local law enforcement agencies will be manning the inspection station in the FM 1960 area. There is no cost for this service.

PRECINCT 4 CONSTABLES

Vacation Watch Home Inspection Traffic Problem

Precinct Four Constable Ron Hickman's office is pleased to announce the "Are You OK?" telephone reassurance program to seniors and homebound individuals of any age, in the community.

The Are You OK? Program is a free service to senior citizens or disabled individuals who are living independently within the Precinct Four jurisdiction in Harris county.  The program provides a daily telephone call made by a computer to the homes of those persons subscribing to the program.  If the telephone is answered, the computer "knows" that the person may not require emergency services.  If the telephone is not answered, assistance is then dispatched to the subscriber's home.

Are You OK? Works to maintain or improve services for senior citizens/disabled persons by allowing them a feeling of security and, in turn encouraging growth and community participation.

Information and applications for the program may be obtained by contacting the Victim Assistance office at 281-401-6250 or the Dispatch office of the Constable at 281-376-3472.  Applications may also be obtained through the Constable's web site located at http://www.cd4.hctx.net  When you get to the home page of our site, just follow the link in the middle of the page.  We will provide information and applications at that time.
