November 2011
Thanksgiving and deep fried turkeys – Almost every
year we respond to some type of fire involving deep frying
turkeys. You must be very careful, read the instructions, and
cook OUTSIDE and away from any overhangs, structures or other
combustibles. Wear gloves, eye protection and a long sleeved
jacket. Be very aware that when you lower the turkey into the
hot oil the remaining moisture will BOIL and cause the oil to
splash, sometimes enough to spill over and cause an oil fire
from the direct propane flame. The key to safely cooking a
turkey is to measure the oil by using water FIRST. Dip the
turkey (before seasoning) into the pot and mark the water level,
then replace the water with the oil. Leave at least 6 inches of
open space above the submerged bird since some water will be
within the bird.
Assure that your propane supply is as far away as possible;
consider a “shield”. If the worst happens, call 9-1-1, and don’t
use water on the burning oil. If you follow this procedure you
should be eating that wonderful turkey without exposure to a
disaster.
The new fire station dedication on September 10 was an absolute
success and the station is now in full operation. Thank you
again for your continued support.

FREE Smoke Detectors
The Ponderosa Fire Department has partnered
with Wayne Wright Lawyers Charitable Campaign to install free
smoke detectors in your home. A very simple process is to call
us at 281-444-8465 to set up an appointment and our firefighters
will come to your home to install the smoke detector(s).
September means back to
school and SAFER driving requirements. We never know when a
child will run out in front of us. Please take additional
precautions.
We have been very busy during the past few months. We have
experienced an increase in emergency responses with most of them
minor in nature but our public is asking for assistance at a
higher rate than we have ever experienced. Significant mutual
aid fires have occurred all around us and our team has performed
well with no injuries.
We ask that you do your part to prevent fires. Cooking fires are
still our number one cause of devastating fire. Never leave your
stove unattended, for any reason (turn it off if you are
distracted). Also, consider inspecting your vent hood ductwork
to assure there is no build up of grease from the many years of
use.
And, don’t forget to plan for a hurricane. While we may not have
the significant winds to contend with, rain will be an issue. Go
to www.hcoem.org
for a host of information and if you are a special needs
(evacuation) person, call 2-1-1 for further information.

Internet
Telephone Cannot Use 9-1-1
Voice Over Internet (VoIP) telephone
service is the latest rage – but you cannot use 9-1-1! This
situation is similar to when cell phones could not access 9-1-1,
and it took many years to begin the process of fixing the
problem (and it isn’t fixed yet). Our recommendation is not to
purchase VoIP at this time, but if you do, you must dial our
direct emergency number 281-444-FIRE (3473) for emergencies.
This method precludes automatic data bursts of your address and
phone number that hinders our computer aided dispatch. Please
consider asking the specific company if 9-1-1 works with VoIP.
Some companies MAY have systems that are being developed.
Please be sure to use lawn chemicals
according to directions and make certain that you store them
away from children. Try not to store more than one gallon of
gasoline in an approved container, and never store your swimming
pool chemicals close to other products. Be sure to NEVER mix
swimming pool chemicals.

Precinct
Four Constable Ron Hickman's office is pleased to announce the
"Are You OK?" telephone reassurance program to seniors
and homebound individuals of any age, in the community.
The
Are You OK? Program is a free service to senior citizens or
disabled individuals who are living independently within the
Precinct Four jurisdiction in Harris county.
The program provides a daily telephone call made by a
computer to the homes of those persons subscribing to the program.
If the telephone is answered, the computer
"knows" that the person may not require emergency
services.
If the telephone is not answered, assistance is then
dispatched to the subscriber's home.
Are
You OK? Works to maintain or improve services for senior
citizens/disabled persons by allowing them a feeling of security
and, in turn encouraging growth and community participation.
Information
and applications for the program may be obtained by contacting the
Victim Assistance office at 281-401-6250 or the Dispatch office of
the Constable at 281-376-3472.
Applications may also be obtained through the Constable's
web site located at http://www.cd4.hctx.net
When you get to the home page of our site, just follow the
link in the middle of the page.
We will provide information and applications at that time.
